Day 22 - Commit the Heart

This year, 2016, can be summed up for me by the word trust. In living it out I have learned that trust looks like surrender: giving up, handing over, letting go.

Giving over the will, the plans, and the desires of the heart means trusting that God not only will make a way but that His way is good. Since the beginning His children have proved that to walk by faith is to have the assurance of things not seen (Heb 11).

This really is at the heart of the righteous. God is good and His love for us is bigger than we could ever imagine (Eph 3:17-19). A heart that knows this can fully surrender to and be abandoned to following after God in every part of life.

God has given each of us a territory, a domain, a terrain, in which we live that has certain boundaries. Right now it may feel like you are wandering through an open land as vast and endless as the desert. Or maybe your domain feels limited by elements outside of your control and you feel confined in some way.

In actuality, if we have put our trust in the Lord, then he is guiding us in the land he has designed for us, maybe even hedging us in so that we keep within the perimeters of his will for our lives. That gives me incredible peace as I place my trust in him.

Everything we do in commitment to Him we can go forward believing that He has our best interest in mind (Jer 29:11). We can trust that He will bring about the purist desires of our heart as we delight ourselves in Him.

Trust in the Lord and do good;
Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord;
And He will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord,
Trust also in Him, and He will do it.

Revive My Heart - Write 31 Days

Day 10 - Trust

Letting go of every single dream
I lay each one down at Your feet
Every moment of my wandering
Never changes what You see

One year ago, I sat in this same spot typing away heart and soul for my first ever 31 day writing challenge. And challenge it was, coming right smack at the beginning of a life-sized trial. My husband and I had just experienced the direct outcome of a downsized economic crisis. His career took a sudden turn after eleven years in the same position; and before we knew it we were unemployed.

As we walked into a desert season, the Lord used people to encourage and pray for us. God was faithful to meet us each day with scripture, a song, or gifts from friends. Although I was writing a lot initially, I found it difficult to pen what was happening in our story. When you're going through treacherous terrain, it is impossible to see the forest despite the trees. Everywhere you look towering obstacles surround on all sides.

Storing Trust

Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
Matthew 6:20-21

My family lives in a typical suburban community nestled within the foothills of a small rural community. Typically, not much takes place in our quiet neck of the woods, but from late October thru the new year, it is bustling with jovial visitors who come to see the lights. A few years ago one of our neighbors around the block began putting his talents to constructing a holiday light show for passers by to enjoy. It evolved over the years to include both Halloween and Christmas as well as synchronized music and lights within a network of over 15 homes. The display has delighted hundreds every year and continues to grow in reputation, so that folks from surrounding communities drive the distance to come see the famous synchronized lights. What a beautiful gift to share with others, delivering joy throughout the holidays!

It was two weeks before Christmas and the neighborhood was abuzz and aglow. A typical school day morning, I was rushing my daughter out to the car, but when I opened the passenger door I noticed things looked out of place. Books in the backseat pockets were strewn on the floor, the glove box was open with contents lying haphazardly on the seat. Suspicious, I checked the back hatch of the trunk. It was ajar. Items in the trunk were loosely laying about and out of order. Only one item was stolen, of little importance or value, but an icky feeling of violation sent shivers through my body. Someone must have gotten into my car during the evening as pedestrians strolled through the neighborhood to view the lights. I had been robbed.

As I followed through the necessary steps with the Sheriff's Department, in speaking with the officer who wrote up the incident, she asked me if there were any signs of forced entry. I realized that the previous evening I had forgotten to lock the car doors. Then she asked if I would like to report anything stolen. I thought for a second about the value of the item taken and realized it was of no importance. The officer handed me her card and a report number for the incident.

Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life.
Proverbs 4:23 (WEB)

Reflecting on this simple violation, I learned an important lesson about the heart. It is true as the scripture says that we must count our trials as an opportunity to produce joy (James 1:2-3). Yet as I became aware, when basking in joy it is also an opportunity for the enemy to prey on my bliss and catch me unaware. By neglecting to lock my car the night before, I had given the culprit an open door to take anything within my vehicle.

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
John 10:10

Incidentally, it was a month later that I began to write this post and all these truths would be tested again. The morning began in strife with my little girl, then an outing that began as a joyous occasion ended in injury and disappointment, and at the end of the day I was confronted with the choice to either become bitter or to respond in grace. That evening I plopped down onto pillows on my bed and prayed. If I had begun the day in prayer, guarding my heart against the wiles of the devil, maybe then I wouldn't have been so surprised when the thief came knocking.

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
-- Phillipians 4:6-7

Ann Voskamp writes about the fullest lift by counting blessings because it is the focused gift of gratitude which practices building a treasury of heavenly trust. Investing in faith on the quiet days when nothing much seems to be happening is the best time to begin counting graces and storing up treasures from heaven. Because soon, the Bible teaches, we will have troubles of various kinds, the storm will arrive, and the bank of our heart will be overwhelmed. But with the investment of trust, you have a storehouse of faith which God may use to multiply using His resources and enable you to stand firm. This will keep you in His peace no matter the storm.

Every time you affirm your trust in Me, you put a coin into My treasury. Thus you build up equity in preparation for days of trouble...The more you trust me the more I empower you to do...Store up for yourself treasure in heaven, through placing your trust in Me. This practice will keep you in My Peace (Sarah Young, Jesus Calling).

You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.
Isaiah 26:3

We will face seasons of trials in this life. Job walked the journey of affliction to learn that God is very big. Jesus told us not to be surprised by trials because He is with us. James wrote about considering our trials an opportunity for great joy. Therefore guard your heart. Don't give the devil an open door to come in and steal your joy. Count daily graces so that on the day of the storm you will be ready to stand firm. Fill the storehouse of your heart with the grace that God supplies and then let it overflow into the lives of others.

And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.
Phillipians 4:19

Deeply Rooted

Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is.
– Ephesians 3:17-18

On a recent camping trip to Mammoth, California, our family took a long hike into the mountains. Along the path we encounter monuments of the creation that sometimes leave one breathless and full of wonder. One such artifact was the huge remains of a tangled system of roots that had once been the foundation of a very large tree. As I observed the enormity of this root structure, I pondered the meaning as it relates to our spiritual foundation. I thought a lot about the importance of roots as the foundation of a tree as it equates to faith in Christ.

One of my favorite things about Summer is the lingering warm evenings and late sunsets. My family enjoys taking a leisurely walk around the neighborhood just before dusk. We have come to cherish our nature walks when we can marvel at the grace of God's creation through the eyes of our child. Our daughter skips merrily along the path, stopping every once in a while to stoop low and observe the movement of a bug on the ground.
Then leaping down along the path, she delightfully lifts her hands in praise and sings, “Thank you Jesus for the sun, and the trees, and the shade!”

On our tree lined street, many of the sycamore and magnolia trees hang low enough along the walk that our girl, a mere 40” tall, has to stand on tip-toe, reaching her hands high overhead to touch the leaves with her fingertips. Occasionally Daddy will lift her onto his shoulders to grab hold of a leaf as she gazes in amazement at the fine detail of every vein and stroke its velvety skin.

Then leaping down along the path, she delightfully lifts her hands in praise and sings, “Thank you Jesus for the sun, and the trees, and the shade!”

My favorite place in our house is seated right under the double windows in the front during the light of dawn. Where we live in the suburbs, tall sycamore trees line the streets, the fullness of their branches extending out and providing shade across the neighborhood. Last year city ordinance forced us to remove the tree out in front of our house, which had really become a beloved feature of our home. I had loved to sit in our large front windows on a breezy day and listen to leaves rustle and clap as if offering their adoration to God.
You will live in joy and peace. The mountains and hills will burst into song, and the trees of the field will clap their hands! (Isaiah 55:11-12)
One of the joys of being a parent is viewing the world through a child's eyes of wonder. It is even more remarkable to witness the faith of a child. Jesus said that unless a person can become like a little child one could not enter the Kingdom of Heaven (Matthew 18:3). I learn more from my little girl about the love of the Father than I do from any book.

We make cherished memories on Saturday mornings, raking the large leaves in a pile and our girl jumping into it with childish abandonment. How I marvel at her free spirit and long for such freedom in my heart. How easily the cares of this life consume our affections and burden our hands from lifting in praise!

"Trees" by Lily

One of the best gifts my mother ever gave me was the gift of prayer, as we drove in the car on the way to school, while we sat on the couch at the end of the day, as she knelt over my bedside. Her example formed a foundation for me that has developed into a life of faith. I want to give my daughter the gift of God's love everyday.

My greatest desire in this life is to know God more and to impart the fullness of his love to my child. Yet as I watch her explore her world in wonder, I realize that the best way I can teach her the love of God is to live it. That I would plant my roots deeply in Christ, living love by example, through reading his word, taking time to pray, and serving others. The fruit of that will be a legacy of faith for my child.
But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water.
